I shared statistics in an earlier blog entry that served as proof that facilitating meaning breeds competitive advantage. This competitive advantage also takes the form of something more personal, its impact in bringing out our personal best. When our work gives us meaning it gives us perspective. We are quickly able to recast the lows we experience from less nourishing parts of our working lives as necessary but temporary side bars to the main act of making a difference in things that matter most to us. It helps us put failures and setbacks more quickly behind us and reframe their significance because we know there are other enriching mission critical tasks to attend to. When we feel lost, meaning gives us something to return to. Meaning also helps us understand to what end we are working so hard for. Meaningful work coaxes the expenditure of more and more discretionary energy out of us and encourages greater risk taking.
What has the discovery or facilitation of meaning brought out in you?
