OK, I’m just gonna say it. What we need more of, now more than ever, is POSITIVITY. At work. In life. There’s been a long run of reasons to turn a cold-shoulder to a sunny outlook.
Let’s break out of this rhythm and break out from the pack by setting a tone of positivity in the workplace. What follows are 4 simple ways to do just that, as I share in my (#1 bestselling!) new release, Leading from the Middle: A Playbook for Managers to Influence Up, Down, and Across.
1. Remember the “Fishbowl Effect.”
As a leader, you live in a fishbowl, with everyone watching from all sides. You get the behaviors you tolerate and exemplify. Never forget that what you say and how you act can stick in the minds of those around you for longer than you ever imagined. So swim about role-modeling positivity, knowing that others get caught up in your riptide.
2. Exude trust and transparency.
Positivity flows from setting a tone of trust, which you do by exhibiting unswerving transparency. Research shows there are six specific forms of transparency that are particularly powerful for building trust (and the corresponding positive vibe). That is, when you show transparency:
• in the information you share and how you share it
• in “state-of-the-union” updates you give about the business
• about why you made a decision
• by being honest with people about where they stand
• in being honest about your shortfalls
• in being open about your agenda (knowing that hidden agendas rarely remain as such)
3. Live the “Attitude Anthem.”
I’m referring here to a quote I kept at hand for years, reminding me of one of the most powerful, far-reaching, tone-setting behaviors I could put on display to positively influence the culture. It’s from author Charles Swindoll: “Life is 10 percent what happens to you and 90 percent how you react to it.”
4. Live the “Gratitude Anthem.”
“You have enough. You are enough.”
Period.
When we live with a sense of gratitude and appreciation for what we have, it spills over into an unmissable sense of positivity. It’s a tour-de-force to exude and get others caught up in.
That’s it. I’m keeping it extra-simple in this one because setting a positive tone is simple—as simple as putting your mind to it.
